Uncertain, 3rd-4th centuries. Aureus (Gold, 20 mm, 6.48 g, 12 h), Germanic imitation, almost certainly based on the reverse of an ADVENTVS AVG aureus of Probus and a Tetrarchic obverse. Garbled legend. Laureate Tetrarchic-style head to left. Rev. Garbled legend. Figure (Victory) walking to left, holding a wreath (and a palm?) with her outstretched hands; behind her, emperor on horseback left, extending his right arm in salute. For an example of a prototype for the obverse: see the aurei of Diocletian illustrated as Calicó 4429 (Antioch) or 4435 (Cyzicus); for prototypes for the reverse: see the aurei of Probus illustrated as Calicó 4137 and 4138 (RIC V, 582 and 890 - Siscia and Cyzicus). Light die-shift on the obverse and light scratches, otherwise, nearly extremely fine.
From a German private collection owned since a generation.
