Description

Jotapian, usurper, circa 248-249. Antoninianus (Billon, 24 mm, 3.19 g, 12 h), Nicopolis in Seleucia. IM C M F R IOTAPIANVS A Radiate, draped, cuirassed and bearded bust of Jotapian to right, seen from behind. Rev. VICT-OR-IA AVG Victory advancing to left, holding a wreath in her right hand and a palm branch in her left. Bland 5 ( dies III/v ). Cohen 1. RIC IV 2a, note. RSC -. Extremely rare. Grey patina, and usual areas of striking weakness, otherwise, very fine.

From a collection in Netherlands.

Jotapian was a little known usurper who revolted in either Syria or Cappadocia because of the exactions of the governor Priscus - probably C. Julius Priscus, the brother of Philip I. His reign was very short and he was murdered by his own troops.
