LYDIA. Blaundus. Pseudo-autonomous issue, time of Antoninus Pius to Marcus Aurelius and Lucius Verus, 138-180. Tetrassarion (Bronze, 29 mm, 18.16 g, 6 h), struck under the archon Marcus Asadius Mucianus. ΙEΡΑ CVΝΚΛΗΤΟC Bare-headed and draped bust of the Senate to left. Rev. BΛΑΥΝΔΕΩΝ ΜΑ ΑCΑΔ MOYΚΙΑΝOΥ ΑΡΧΟΝ Apollo Tyrimnaios on horseback right, holding reins in his right hand and labrys over his left shoulder with his left. GRPC Lydia 64. RPC IV.2 Online temp. 9318. SNG Leypold 1057. SNG Munich 85. A lovely example, by far the best known, of fine style and with an excellent green and brown patina. Minor marks, otherwise, nearly extremely fine.
This piece provides us - at last - with a complete reading of the archon's name. Another Mucianus, surely related to the M. Asadius Mucianus named on this coin, was the Julius Mucianus, who signed coins struck in Germe during the reign of Hadrian (as RPC 1766b-c).
