SICILY. Katane. Circa 450-405 BC. Tetradrachm (Silver, 29 mm, 16.89 g, 3 h), 450-445. Male charioteer wearing a long chiton and holding a goad in his right hand and the reins in both, driving a walking quadriga to right. Rev. KATANAION Laureate head of Apollo to right. Dewing 584 ( same dies ). W. Giesecke, Sicilia numismatica, pl. IV.4 ( this coin ). Gulbenkian 180 ( same dies ). Rizzo pl. X, 12 ( same reverse die ). SNG ANS 1241-2 ( same obverse die ). SNG Lloyd 893 ( same obverse die ). Beautifully toned and sharply struck on a broad flan, a superb coin of excellent early Classical style. Extremely fine.
