Description

DYNASTS OF LYCIA. Mithrapata, circa 390-370 BC. Hemiobol (Silver, 8 mm, 0.35 g, 6 h). Lion's scalp facing. Rev. Μ - Ε - 𐊉 Triskeles to left; all within a shallow incuse square. Cf. Müseler VII, 91-92 ( diobols ). Naville 81, 2023, 172 ( 0.28 g, but misdescribed as a diobol ). Extremely rare. Clearly struck and lightly toned. Good very fine.

From the "Collection sans Pareille" of Ancient Greek Fractions, acquired in 1987.

During the later teens of this century immense numbers of DIOBOLs of Mithrapata came on the world market, but smaller fractions, such as obols, seem much rarer, while this hemiobol appears to be rare in the extreme! in fact, the only example we could find was the one appeared, described as a diobol (sic!) in Naville 81.
