This commemorates the famous ruse of Prince Maurice’s, in which a picked band of troops were smuggled into Breda by hiding them within a barge filled with peat. The barge was allowed through the water gate and the troops later got out, over-powered the Spanish guards and opened the main gates to the Dutch army.
