Description

C. Servilius M.f, 136 BC. Denarius (Silver, 17 mm, 3.21 g, 6 h), Rome. ROMA Helmeted head of Roma to right; behind, wreath and denomination mark. Rev. C · SERVEILI · M · F The Dioscuri riding apart. Babelon (Servilia) 1. BMCRR 540-7. Crawford 239/1. RBW 984. Sydenham 525. Minor marks and somewhat weakly struck. Nearly very fine.

From a Swiss collection, acquired from Emporium Hamburg.

The design of this type was 'recycled' by the Italian allies revolting against Rome in the so called bellum social in 91-89 BC. To fit its new purpose, the obverse legend of ROMA was replaced with ITALIA, the reverse legend was dedicated to C. Papius Mutilus, the leader of the Samnite army (cf. Campana 5a).
