Description

KINGS OF THRACE. Lysimachos, 305-281 BC. Tetradrachm (Silver, 30 mm, 16.95 g, 12 h), struck posthumously, Parion, c. 270s-250s BC. Diademed head of the deified Alexander the Great to right, with horn of Ammon over his ear. Rev. BAΣIΛEΩΣ ΛΥΣIMAΧOΥ Athena seated to left on throne, holding Nike, crowning the king's name, in her right hand, and leaning her left elbow on her shield; behind her, transverse spear; outer left, thyrsos; inner left, monogram of ΦY. Meydancikkale 2681. Müller 362. Seyrig, Parion 10 (same dies). With a head of Alexander in a bold, individual style, reminiscent of a Seleukid portrait. Attractively toned. Minor marks, otherwise, extremely fine.
