Maximinus I, 235-238. Denarius (Silver, 19 mm, 3.25 g, 12 h), Rome, 236. IMP MAXIMINVS PIVS AVG Laureate, draped and cuirassed bust of Maximinus I to right. Rev. PAX AVGVSTI Pax standing left, holding an olive branch in her upraised right hand and a transverse scepter in her left. BMC 68. Cohen 31. RIC 12. Very well-struck and with a fine portrait. Virtually as struck.
From a collection in the USA.
This is a relatively early portrait of Maximinus I, partly based on late examples of Severus Alexander because there were no available sculptural or painted portraits of the new emperor. However, the craggy look of this portrait must have been taken from written or oral descriptions provided by people who had actually seen him (see the note to the following lot).
