Description

EGYPT. Alexandria. Antoninus Pius, 138-161. Hemidrachm (Bronze, 30 mm, 15.26 g, 12 h), regnal year ϵ = 5 = 141/142. ΑΝΤωΝΙΝΟC CϵΒ YCΒ Radiate and laureate head of Antoninus Pius to right. Rev. L - ϵ The Pharos of Alexandria, surmounted by a lantern topped by a statue of Poseidon, flanked, on the corners of the tower, by two statues of tritons facing outwards. Dattari -. Emmett -. Geissen -. RPC IV, 4, online, 16091 = SNG Paris 2259 ( this obverse die ). Extremely rare with this obverse legend, the Paris example is the only piece recorded in the RPC. Well-centered and attractive, with a brown patina and some green deposits. Very fine.
