Description

SELEUKID KINGS. Demetrios II Nikator, second reign, 129-126/5 BC. Tetradrachm (Silver, 29 mm, 16.22 g, 12 h), Ake Ptolemais, undated but probably 127/6 BC. Diademed head of Demetrios II to right. Rev. ΒΑΣΙΛΕΩΣ - ΔΗΜΗΤΡΙΟΥ / ΘΕΟΥ - ΝΙΚΑΤΟΡΟΣ Zeus, draped from the waist, seated to left on high backed throne, holding Nike in his right hand and long scepter with his left; in exergue, monogram of ΔΗ and ΜΥ. CSE 802. HGC 9, 1117g. LSM 4. SC 2202. Beautifully toned and with a bearded portrait of Demetrios II in a serene and elegant Hellenistic style. Minor marks, otherwise, nearly extremely fine.

From a European collection acquired in the 1960s.
