Description

MACEDON. Neapolis. Circa 500-480 BC. Obol (Silver, 11 mm, 1.14 g). Gorgoneion facing with protruding tongue. Rev. Quadripartite incuse square. SNG ANS 423. Traite II, 1, 1742. A superb piece, beautifully toned and with fine surfaces. Extremely fine.

From a European collection, formed prior to 2005.

The exact denomination of this coin is a dilemma! If the preceding lot is a stater, and it is, this can only be a tenth. That would be reasonable except for the fact that there is an intermediate denomination that weighs c. 4 g, which does not fit into a decimal system. Calling this piece an obol and the larger a tetrobol seemingly solves the problem, but does it?
