Description

SICILY. Syracuse. Second Democracy, 466-405 BC. Tetradrachm (Silver, 25 mm, 17.45 g, 6 h), circa 430-420. Charioteer, holding kentron in his right hand and the reins in his left, driving a quadric moving slowly to the right; above, Nike flying the right, crowning the horses with a wreath; in the exergue, olive branch. Rev. ΣYΡΑΚΟΣΙΟΝ Head of Arethusa to right, her hair bound in a sakkos, wearing a double spiral earring and a simple necklace; around, four dolphins. Boehringer 656 (V331/R451). McClean 2688 (= Boehringer 656.1, same dies ). Pozzi 594 (= Boehringer 656.5, same dies ). A lovely example, nicely toned. Good very fine.
