Description

CALABRIA. Tarentum. Circa 240-228 BC. Nomos or Didrachm (Silver, 20 mm, 6.43 g, 1 h), struck under the magistrates Zopyrion, So.. and Ep... Young man, wearing a tunic and leaning back with his head facing front, riding a horse springing to right, holding the horse's mane with his left hand and the reins with his right; below right, bucranion with the letters ΣΩ between its horns; below, on the exergual line, ΖΩΠΥΡΙΩΝ. Rev. Τ - ΑΡΑΣ Phalanthos, nude, riding dolphin to left, holding a hippocamp in his right hand and a trident with his left; to right, head of Pan to left, above the dolphin's back, monogram of ΕΠ. HN III 1054. SNG ANS 1246. Vlasto 940-941. Well-centered and sharp. Some minor flatness, otherwise, nearly extremely fine/extremely fine.

What, exactly, is the rider doing, turning his face out to his left? Some form of rodeo-like equine acrobatics?
