Description

CALABRIA. Tarentum. Circa 450-440 BC. Nomos or Didrachm (Silver, 24 mm, 7.98 g, 5 h). ΤΑRΑΣ ( retrograde ) Phalanthos, nude and with both of his arms stretched out to right, riding a dolphin swimming to right; below, scallop shell downwards; border of dots. Rev. ΤΑR[ΑΣ] Young man ( Oikist - Taras ), with hair cut short in the manner of an athlete, draped from the waist, seated to left on a diphros, and holding an upright spindle in his right hand and a long staff (a baktéria in ancient Greek) in his left. HN III 844. Fischer-Bossert 170 (V83/R119). McClean 551. Rare. Attractive and struck on a broad flan, toned as found. Good very fine.

From a Swiss collection, acquired in Zurich in the early 1990s.
