Description

SICILY. Katane. Circa 415/3-403/2 BC. Tetradrachm (Silver, 26 mm, 17.12 g, 3 h), struck from an obverse die signed by Herakleidas. Charioteer, holding goad in his right hand and reins in both, driving fast quadriga to left, passing the turn-post on his right; above, Nike flying right, crowning the charioteer with a wreath held in her extended right hand and the horses with a wreath held in her left; below triple exergual line, Η . Rev. KATANAIΩN Head of Apollo to left, wearing a tainia tied at the back of his head with ties ending in pearls, and with his hair falling down to cover part of his neck. AMB 336. Buceti 53, Kraay - Hirmer 40-41, Rizzo pl. XIV, 1 and SNG Copenhagen 179 ( all same dies ). Bright, lightly toned and most attractive. Some areas flatly struck, otherwise, good extremely fine.
