Description

IONIA. Uncertain mint. Circa 550-525 BC. Hekte (Electrum, 11 mm, 2.37 g), on the Lydo-Milesian weight standard. Forepart of a bull to left, with linear ornaments ( letters? ) above and before. Rev. Rough incuse square with a vaguely cruciform pattern. Cf. Fischer-Bossert, "Horses", passim for a series with very similar reverses. Nomos 20, 2020, 209 (CHF 14000) = Lanz 156, 2013, 190 (€9000) ( same dies. Cf. SNG Kayhan 733-734 (smaller denomination). Weidauer -. Extremely rare, probably the third example known. Boldly struck and impressive. Extremely fine.
