Description

KINGS OF MACEDON. Demetrios I Poliorketes, 306-283 BC. Tetradrachm (Silver, 25 mm, 17.07 g, 6 h), Tarsos, c. 298-295. Nike, blowing a trumpet and holding a stylis, alighting to left on a left-facing galley prow. Rev. BAΣI-ΛEΩΣ ΔHMHTΡIOΥ Poseidon, nude but for wreath of reeds and a chlamys wrapped around his left arm, striding left, hurling trident from his upraised right hand; to left, monogram of ΛΙ within a circle; in the right field, monogram of ΠΑΡ. Cf. Newell 33 ( same monograms but on a stater ). Sharply struck in high relief, attractively toned. Reverse struck slightly off-center, otherwise, extremely fine.
