Head of Athena to right, wearing Corinthian helmet adorned with a serpent coiled to the right. Rev. ΑΛΕΞΑΝΔΡΟΥ Nike standing left, holding laurel wreath in her right hand and stylis in her left; below right wing, eagle standing left; in left field, monogram of ΕΠ; below left wing, silphium plant. Naville 235. Price 3988. Extremely rare. A few minor deposits and light marks, otherwise, very fine.

From a Swiss collection, formed prior to 2005.

The symbols on this coin tell us a great deal: we have the eagle of Ptolemy I, which tells us who the real ruler was, and the silphium plant, which tells us the mint.
