Description

SICILY. Syracuse. Dionysios I, 405-367 BC. Tetradrachm (Silver, 24 mm, 17.23 g, 2 h), unsigned but in the style of Eukleidas, circa 405-400. Charioteer, holding reins in both hands and kentron in right, driving a quadriga rushing to left, about to turn, the head of the third horse turned back to right; above, Nike flying right to crown the driver; in exergue, dolphin leaping left. Rev. [ΣΥ-ΡΑ-Κ-Ο-ΣΙ-Ω-Ν] Head of Arethusa to left, wearing ampyx, double-spiral earring and simple necklace with a large pearl pendant; in the field to left, three dolphins: two swimming downwards and one upwards; to right, behind Arethusa's neck, dolphin swimming downwards. Buceti 525. HGC 2, 1345. SNG ANS 299. SNG Lloyd 1406 ( same dies ). Fischer-Bossert/Tudeer 101 (dies 43/70). Attractive and clear, a rare variant. Struck on a slightly narrow flan, otherwise, good very fine.
