Description

★ Massive Early Roman Currency ★

Anonymous, 4th century BC. Disk-shaped Aes formatum (Bronze, 1504 mm, 2503.00 g). Disk-shaped with mounded obverse. Rev. Flat reverse with crude quartering cross-shaped indentation. Haeberlin p. 4, pl. 2, 7. Very rare and quite massive. Green patina with light deposits, otherwise, as made.

Called aes formatum by Haeberlin, this very rare bronze currency was a precursor to the issues of aes grave but later than aes rude. Although a few have appeared on the market over the past several years, we have yet to see one intentionally scored on the reverse, such as is the case with this example.
