Description

Tacitus, 275-276. Denarius (Billon, 20 mm, 2.89 g, 6 h), struck from Aureus dies, Siscia, November-December 275. IMP C M CL TACITVS P AVG Laureate, draped and cuirassed bust of Tacitus to right. Rev. ROMAE AETERNAE Roma, draped and wearing a helmet, seated left on backless stool with oval shield on its side, holding Victory in her right hand and spear with her left. BN -. Cohen -. Estiot -. RIC -. Cf. RIC temp 3603 (a denarius that is very similar but with the obverse legend IMP C M CLA rather than just CL as here). (Cf. Naumann 1, 2013, 267 and Rauch 71, 2003, 906: similar but in inferior condition). Very rare. Sharp, clear and extremely attractive. Traces of original silvering. Extremely fine.
