Description

Kings of Lydia. Kroisos, circa 560-546 BC. Stater (Silver, 14.5 - 21.1 mm, 10.68 g), Sardes. On the left, forepart of a lion to right confronting, on the right, the forepart of a bull to left. Rev. Two incuse squares, of unequal size, side by side. ACGC 79. SNG von Aulock 2873. Traité I 407, pl. X, 7. A sharply struck, well-centered and toned coin, surely one of the finest known examples. Extremely fine. From the Ravenel Collection, USA, and from that of Baron Thyssen- Bornemisza and Dr. T. S. Kaplan, Numismatica Genevensis IX, 14 December 2015, 63, ex The Numismatic Auction 2, 12 December 1983, 158, once in the stock of Tradart.
