Description

Islands off Caria. Kos. Circa 285-258 BC. Tetradrachm (Silver, 27 mm, 14.96 g), Xanthippos. Head of Herakles to right, wearing lion's skin headdress. Rev. ΚΩΙΟΝ / ΧΑΝΘΙЁEΠΟΣ Crab with bow-case (gorytus) below; all within linear square made of pearls. BMFA Suppl- 195 (same dies). Requier 63 (D11/R53). A bright coin, with a noble, Alexander-like head of the youthful Herakles. Remains of corrosion on the obverse behind the head, otherwise, extremely fine. From an American collection, acquired from Pegasi in August 2015 (described as "XF", but with no note of the corrosion present on the obverse).
