Description

Korkyra. Circa 510-480 BC. Stater (Silver, 21 mm, 11.07 g), circa 500. Cow standing left, her head turned back to right to lick calf sucking to right. Rev. Two rectangular stellate incuses, one with a central linear rectangle and the other with a central linear lozenge. BMC 10. Rosen 169. SNG Lockett 1662. Lightly toned, bold and attractive. Nearly extremely fine. From the Prospero Collection, New York Sale XXVII, 4 January 2012, 345, bought from Spink's on 14 January 1990. It would be so interesting to know where Spink acquired this coin in 1990! It is quite clear that it could not have been found soon before Spink got it since its surfaces show every sign of it having been long in collections. It should not be forgotten that a remarkable number of fairly old collections had been stored in banks for safe-keeping since well before World War II (in Switzerland, England and the USA, for example); coins from such groups began being dispersed from the 1970s onwards.
