Description

Thrace. Abdera. Circa 473/0-449/8 BC. Tetradrachm (Silver, 26 mm, 14.98 g). ΚΑ-ΛΛ-ΙΔΑ-ΜΑΣ Griffin seated to left, raising his right foreleg; below, tunny to left. Rev. ΑΒΔ-ΗΡ-ΙΤΕ-ΩΝ Quadripartite linear square within an incuse square. AMNG 61. Kraay & Hirmer 427. May, Abdera 146d (A120/P119, this coin). SNG Copenhagen. A par­ticularly attractive and dramatic example, beautifully toned and with an impressive pedigree. Nearly extremely fine. From the Ravenel Collection, USA, and from the Prospero Collection, New York Sale XXVII, 4 January 2012, 220, ex Monnaies et Médailles 64, 30 January 1984, 61 (illustrated on the front cover) acquired from Baldwin's in March 1948, and from the collections of H. G. Bois, Sotheby's, 7 July 1947, 174 and that of F. S. Benson, SWH, 3 February 1909, 448, previously in the Trist Collection.
