★ A seal of a Byzantine Imperial "Bodyguard" ★

BYZANTINE SEALS. Georgios (?) protospatharios and epi tou manglabiou, circa 11th century. Seal or Bulla (Lead, 28.5 mm, 10.26 g, 12 h), Constantinople. O /ΓE/Ω/P -Γ/IO/C Nimbate and draped bust of youthful and beardless St. Georgios facing, holding spear over his right shoulder and small shield with which he covers his left side. Rev. [...] / +BO[..]/ T, ACΠ[ΘP,]/ S EΠI TOY / MAΓAΛ/•BIOY• in six lines within round dotted border. Fine "Komnenian" style. Edge broken from 9h to 12h, otherwise, very fine.
