Description

TROAS. Sigeion. Circa 355-334 BC. Chalkous (Bronze, 12 mm, 1.93 g, 1 h). Head of Athena facing, turned slightly to right, wearing triple-crested Attic helmet, disc earrings, and necklace. Rev. ΣΙΓΕ Owl standing right, head facing; behind, crescent. SNG Ashmolean 1214-5. Green patina with sandy highlights. Very fine.

Sigeion, which name means 'silent place' in ancient Greek, is assumed to be an antiphrastic name: the region where the polis existed, at the very mouth of the Hellespont, was noted for its especially violent storms.
