ΣΙΓΕ Owl standing right, head facing; behind, crescent. SNG Ashmolean 1214-5. Green patina with sandy highlights. Very fine.
Sigeion, which name means 'silent place' in ancient Greek, is assumed to be an antiphrastic name: the region where the polis existed, at the very mouth of the Hellespont, was noted for its especially violent storms.
