THESSALY. Kierion. Early to mid 4th century BC. (Bronze, 16.5 mm, 2.41 g, 6 h). Laureate and bearded head of Zeus to left. Rev. KIEPI-AION ( retrograde ) Arne, half-kneeling to right, looking left and playing with knucklebones. BCD Thessaly II 107.2. Rogers 174. Brown patina. Very fine.

The Nymph Arne playing with knucklebones appears regularly on coins from Kierion, whereas astragaloi are quite rarely depicted on coins from the Greek world in general (see B. Tahberer, Astragaloi - Knucklebones on Ancient Greek and Roman Coins, The Celator 26.4 (2012), 6-21).
