Description

Galba, 68-69. Aureus (Gold, 22 mm, 7.18 g, 5 h), Rome. IMP SER GALBA CAESAR AVG Laureate and draped bust of Galba seen from behind. Rev. DIVA AVGVSTA Diva Julia Augusta (Livia) standing left, holding patera in outstretched right hand and long scepter in left. BMC 3. Calicó 472. RIC 188 (R3). Same dies as Noble 89, 3753. Struck on a broad flan; extremely rare, only the second with this bust available in Coin Archives. Heavily scratched and smoothed, with considerable mounting marks , otherwise, nearly very fine.
From the collection of W. F. Stoecklin, Amriswil, Switzerland, bought from David Nussbaum and from the Geheimrat von Kaufmann collection, Hamburger 27 May 1929, 813.

According to Mr. Bocciarelli who provided the pedigree for this example, only two Aurei with this obverse die are known. The present example and the Aureus from Noble 89, 25 November 2008, 3753 ex Schweizerische Kreditanstalt 5, 18 April 1986, 376.
