Description

EGYPT. Alexandria. Hadrian, 117-138. Drachm (Bronze, 34.00 mm, 25.64 g, 12 h), year IH = 18 = 133-134. ΑΥΤ ΚΑΙC ΤΡΑΙΑΝ - ΑΔΡΙ[ΑΝΟC CEB] Laureate, draped and cuirassed bust of Hadrian to right. Rev. L - IH Draped bust of Nilus to right, wearing a taenia ending in lotus buds over his forehead; and with a cornucopia, here barely visible, over his far shoulder. Dattari (Savio) -. Geissen -. K&G -. RPC III 5897. Extremely rare. With a dark brown patina and a superb "portrait" of Nilus on the reverse. Very well cleaned, otherwise, good very fine.

From the collection of Jean-Pierre Righetti, ex Classical Numismatic Group E361, 14 October 2015, 844 (but since very well-cleaned to remove obtrusive overlying deposits and corrosion).
