Description

PTOLEMAIC KINGS OF EGYPT. Ptolemy V Epiphanes, 205-180 BC. Tetradrachm (Silver, 26.5 mm, 13.87 g, 12 h), Soloi in Cilicia, c. 204-200 BC. Jugate busts to right of Serapis, laureate, bearded and draped, and Isis, crowned, diademed and draped. Rev. ΠTOΛEMAIOY BAΣIΛEΩΣ Eagle with closed wings standing on thunderbolt to left, his head turned back to right, with cornucopia at his shoulder; in field to left, owl facing to left above ME; in field to right, monogram of HP. Landvatter -. Svoronos -. Unique and unpublished. The obverse die of this coin links with the one in the previous lot- though that reverse has no monograms - thus proving that both were struck in the same mint. Traces of die rust and some corrosion, otherwise, good very fine.

When the tetradrachm of Soloi - lot 290 of Nomos 20 - appeared in 2020, it was then unique, but thanks to the fact that its obverse was the same as Landvatter O32, it was possible to link the ME monogram with the mint of Soloi. This immediately forced the reattribution of Landvatter 105 to Soloi; and, thus, the ME monogram on the present coin means that it too can be attributed to Soloi.
