CARIA. Knidos. Circa 449-411 BC. Drachm (Silver, 17 mm, 6.07 g, 8 h). Forepart of lion to right, with open jaws and outstretched right paw. Rev. Diademed head of Aphrodite Euploia to right, her hair tied at the back in a pony tail, and wearing a pearl necklace; all within an incuse square. Cahn 86 (V40/R59). SNG Keckman 134 ( same reverse die ). Very rare - only one example from these dies recorded by Cahn. A very attractive example, well centered and struck in a fine and sober Classical style. Light scuff on the reverse, otherwise, extremely fine.
Somewhat unusual is that although Knidos' patron deity was Artemis Hyacinthotropos, the goddess Aphrodite Euploia, originally a Phoenician deity, featured regularly on her coinage.
