Description

IONIA. Uncertain. Circa 600-550 BC. Stater (Electrum, 20 mm, 16.56 g), Phokaic standard. Chimaera, with a lion's body, open jaws and a heavy mane, a goats head and neck, and a serpent tail, standing left. Rev. Two irregular incuse squares of unequal size. BMC Ionia 41 and pl. II, 2 = PCG I A, 18. Extremely rare and of great interest. Minor die rust and edge splits, otherwise, good very fine.
