MYSIA. Lampsakos. Circa 500-450 BC. Drachm (Silver, 22 mm, 5.05 g, 11 h). Janiform female head, wearing a double stephane and a circular earring. Rev. Helmeted head of Athena to left within a shallow incuse square; behind, amphora. Baldwin, Lampsakos, pl. V, 20 = de Luÿnes 2479 = SNG Paris 1125 ( same dies ) . Extremely rare with this symbol, the second example known, with the other in Paris. Of astonishingly attractive late Archaic style, with a reverse die that is surely the finest of all the reverses of this series. Minor roughness, die-break on the reverse, and struck on an irregular flan, otherwise, extremely fine.
From a collector in the Antipodes, acquired prior to 2000.
