Description

THESSALY. Pherai. Alexander, tyrant, circa 369-358 BC. Drachm (Silver, 20 mm, 5.82 g, 6 h). Head of Ennodia to right; in field to right, torch. Rev. ΑΛΕΞΑΝΔΡΟΥ Head of roaring lion to right; below, labrys. BCD Thessaly II 129 ( this coin ). SNG Lockett 1475. Very rare and darkly toned, the obverse struck in high relief. Extremely fine.

The goddess Ennodia (or Enodia = the one in the streets ) is a distinctly Thessalian deity who has been equated with both Artemis and Hekate. She was the protectress of roads and entrances, both of cities and houses; in some of her aspects she protected children, while in others she was worshipped in graveyards; her primary center of worship was at Pherai.
