Description

LUCANIA. Velia. Circa 334-300 BC. Didrachm or nomos (Silver, 22 mm, 7.43 g, 12 h), from the Kleudorus Group. Head of Athena to left, wearing an Attic helmet adorned with a griffin; behind her neck, monogram of ΚΛΕΥ. Rev. YEΛΗΤΩΝ Lion walking to left with his right foreleg raised; above, Θ; below, monogram of ΚΛΕΥ. HN III 1290. Pozzi 250 ( this coin ). SNG ANS 1316. SNG Ashmolean 1236. SNG Lloyd 522. Williams 306e ( this coin ). Very attractively toned and of lovely style. Some minor die rust, otherwise, about extremely fine.
