Description

Licinius I, 308-324. Aureus (Gold, 20 mm, 5.33 g, 11 h), Siscia, 316. LICINI-VS P F AVG Laureate and draped bust of Licinius I to right. Rev. IOVI CONSERVATORI AVG / SIS Jupiter standing to left, nude but for cloak over his left arm, holding victory on globe in his extended right hand and scepter in his left; at his feet to left, eagle standing left, looking back at Jupiter and holding wreath in his beak; in field to right, X. Depeyrot 16/1. RIC VI 212 var. and RIC VII 18 var. Struck from the same reverse die as Wien KHM RÖ 47357, but that coin has a normal undraped bust. Extremely rare, and probably unpublished with this obverse bust. A superb piece with a powerful obverse portrait. Some very faint marks, otherwise, good extremely fine.
