Gordian III, 238-244. As (Copper, 29 mm, 15.15 g, 12 h), Rome, 238. IMP CAES M ANT GORDIANVS AVG Laureate, draped and cuirassed bust of Gordian III to right. Rev. IOVI CONSERVATORI / S C Jupiter standing facing, head to left, holding scepter with his left hand and thunderbolt over Gordian standing to left, with his right. Cohen 107. RIC 255b. An impressive piece struck on a very large flan, with wide borders. Light roughness and an area of deposits on the reverse, otherwise, nearly extremely fine.
Over weight asses seem to have been struck as presentation pieces, or pseudo-medallions, to be given as donatives. They probably had no extra value, but they would have been noticeable!
