Description

SICILY. Katane. Circa 461-450 BC. Tetradrachm (Silver, 27 mm, 16.98 g, 10 h), dies engraved by the "Aetna Master". The river god Amenanos, portrayed as a bearded man-headed bull swimming to right; above, branch; below, fish swimming to right (probably a grey mullet). Rev. ΚΑΤΑΝΕ Nike running to left, holding ribbons in her right hand. BMC 2 ( this reverse die ). Gulbenkian 175 ( same dies ). Jameson 1891 ( this coin ). Kraay & Hirmer 29 ( same dies ). Niggeler 104 ( this coin ). Rizzo pl. 9, 3 ( same dies ). Nearly extremely fine.
