★ Very rare issue with the epithet ΕΥΕΡΓΕΤΟΥ ★
PTOLEMAIC KINGS OF EGYPT. Ptolemy VIII Euergetes II (Physcon), first reign, 164-163 BC. (Bronze, 25 mm, 10.32 g, 12 h), naming Ptolemy Euergetes II, Kyrene. Laureate head of Zeus-Ammon to right, ram's horn over ear. Rev. ΒΑΣΙΛΕΩΣ ΠΤΟΛΕΜΑΙΟΥ ΕΥΕΡΓΕΤΟΥ Eagle with folded wings standing left, hear turned back to right; in left field, Φ. Svoronos 1644. SNG Copenhagen -. Very rare issue with the epithet ΕΥΕΡΓΕΤΟΥ. Reddish-brown patina. Surfaces slightly rough, otherwise, very fine.
This coin is unusual in that it carries the epithet ΕΥΕΡΓΕΤΟΥ as part of the reverse legend naming Ptolemy VIII Euergetes II. Although it departs from earlier Kyrenean issues that have the portrait of Ptolemy I on the obverse and Libya on the reverse, it is unequivocally from Kyrene as shown by its presence in the excavations there.
