LYDIA. Daldis. Time of Septimius Severus, 193-211. 1/3 Assarion (Bronze, 17 mm, 2.50 g, 6 h). Laureate head of bearded Herakles to right. Rev. ΔΑΛΔΙΑΝΩΝ Grape bunch on vine. GRPC, Lydia 11. Mionnet Suppl. VII 116. Brown and tan patina; very rare, none in CA. Light porosity, otherwise, very fine.
From the Vineyard Collection, ex Münzen & Medaillen (DE) 12, 10 April 2003, 190.
GRPC describes the obverse as the mature head of Dionysos, with no mention of the laurel wreath although it is clearly visible in the accompanying illustration. Because the wreath is made of laurel and not vine leaves, this would seem to indicate that the head is not Dionysos. The laureate and bearded head is identical to that of Herakles on many pseudo-autonomous issues from Roman Asia, thus here we describe the head as that of Herakles.
