Description

JUDAEA. Bar Kochba Revolt. 132-135 CE. Small Bronze (Bronze, 22 mm, 7.42 g, 5 h), year 1 = 132/3. Eleazar the Priest Palm tree with seven branches and two date clusters. Rev. Year One of the Redemption of Israel Bunch of grapes on stalk. Hendin 1380. Mildenberg 150 (O1/R4). TJC 224. Very rare, if not unknown, struck on a serrated flan. Clear and with a reddish-brown patina overlaid with sand in the serrations. Good very fine.

This coin is most exciting because the serrated edges indicate that it must have been overstruck on a Seleukid bronze "denomination B" as struck by a variety of rulers of the 2nd century BC. Thus, that original coin must have still been around to be overstruck approximately 300 years later!
