ARMENIA, Cilician Armenia. Baronial (?). Circa 11th-12th century. Pogh (Bronze, 15 mm, 1.27 g, 6 h). Cross pattée with supports at base; globe below base. Rev. Cross pattée with supports at base; globe below base. ACV -. CCA -. Cf. Leu Winterthur e7, 2019, 1707. Extremely rare, apparently there are less than 10 examples known. Very fine.
The attribution of this very elusive series to the Baronial period of the Cilician Armenia is based exclusively on iconographic similarities with the pogh coinage of Toros I (ACV 246, CCA 2). As there are no other examples from the baronial period without legend, we are not able to assign this rare type to a known ruler, but it could well be either of Toros I, or even one of his predecessors Ruben I or Constantine I. This possibility is just exciting.
