Description

SICILY. Leontini. Circa 450-440 BC. Tetradrachm (Silver, 24.5 mm, 17.32 g, 3 h). Laureate head of Apollo to right. Rev. LE-O-NT-IN-ON Head of roaring lion to right; around, four barley corns. Boehringer, Münzgeschichte 35 ( same dies ). HGC 2, 667. SNG ANS 222-31. Lovely old cabinet tone. Very fine.

From the John Everett Duke Collection, acquired from E. J. Waddell on 26 July 1983 and from the collection of F. S. Knobloch, Stack's 10 June 1970, 125, previously acquired from Jacob Hirsch.
