Description

LUCANIA. Velia. Circa 300-280 BC. Nomos (Silver, 19.5 mm, 7.28 g, 5 h), Philistion group. Head of Athena right, wearing crested Attic helmet decorated with a griffin; behind neck guard, A; before neck, Φ. Rev. [Y]EΛHTΩN Lion prowling right; above, dolphin to right between I and Φ. HN III 1307. SNG ANS 1377 ( same dies ). SNG Ashmolean 1335 ( same dies ). SNG Fitzwilliam 686 ( same dies ). Williams 461 (O230/R322). Well centered and toned. Good very fine.

From the collection of W. Belser, Zürich, prior to 1965, and that of his son, acquired in the early 1970s.
