Description

MACEDON. Philippoi. Circa 356-345 BC. Drachm (Silver, 15.5 mm, 3.19 g, 6 h). Head of youthful Herakles to right, wearing lion's skin headdress. Rev. ΦΙΛΙΠΠΩΝ Tripod, with three circular handles adorned with fillets; above, laurel branch; in field to right, bow. Bellinger 8 (citing BMC 4, SNG ANS 650 and SNG Copenhagen 293). Rare, and of excellent style. Somewhat porous surfaces. Extremely fine.

From a German collection, acquired in Munich in the 1990s.
