Description

SICILY. Messana. Circa 425-421 BC. Tetradrachm (Silver, 25 mm, 17.43 g, 1 h). The Nymph Messana, wearing long chiton and holding whip in her right hand and the reins in both, driving biga of mules walking to right; above, Nike flying to right with a wreath to crown the mules; in exergue, two opposed dolphins. Rev. ΜΕΣ-Σ-Α-Ν-ΙΟ-Ν Hare springing to right; below, dolphin swimming to right. BMC 39 (same dies). Caltabiano 526.12 (D208/R223 this coin). Attractive, toned, well-struck and well-centered. Obverse struck from a slightly rusty die, otherwise, extremely fine.

From the collection of W. Belser, Zürich, prior to 1965, and that of his son, acquired in the early 1970s from Bank Leu, with the original ticket, and from the collection of V. M. Brand, Hess-Leu 45, 12 May 1970, 50.
