Description

BRUTTIUM. Kroton. Circa 530-500 BC. Stater (Silver, 29 mm, 7.98 g, 1 h). ϘΡΟ Tripod with legs ending in lion’s feet, and with three handles and snakes rising from the bowl; cable border. Rev. Same type, but incuse; rayed border. HN III 2075. SNG ANS 227. SNG Lloyd 591. SNG Lockett 597. A boldly struck, attractive and toned example. Minor marks and traces of corrosion and possible repair under the toning, otherwise, nearly extremely fine.

From the John Everett Duke Collection acquired from E. J. Waddell on 27 August 1982, and from the Lloyd Collection (not in the SNG) and once in the collection of Sir Arthur Evans, Ars Classica XVI, 3 July 1933, 317.
