Description

LUCANIA. Metapontum. Circa 400-340 BC. Nomos (Silver, 23 mm, 7.66 g, 7 h), c. 350. NIKA Head of Nike to right, wearing ampyx and sphendone, decorated with three stars and tied above her forehead, and pendant earring. Rev. METAΠONTION Ear of barley with leaf to right; above leaf, pomegranate with blossom above. BMC 141 = HN III 1526 and pl. 28 = Noe, Metapontum 495 c (same dies). SNG ANS 373 (same dies). Very rare. Of a most attractive and sedate late Classical style. Toned. Good very fine.

The appearance of Nike on this coin, clearly identified with her name on the obverse, almost certainly must relate to a contemporary victory, but which one is at present unknown.
